Fake call detection now available worldwide

Google announced in a blog post that the fake call detection feature is rolling out globally to smartphones running Android 12 and later. The feature will be available through the 'Phone by Google' app and will be turned on by default on supported devices.

The company says the system can automatically identify potentially fraudulent calls and alert users in real-time, allowing users to avoid scams before they share any sensitive information.

How this feature works

If an Android device suspects a call might be fake, the call recipient's phone will send a verification request to the caller's device.

This system checks whether the caller is actually calling.

If the caller's device confirms that no call was initiated from that phone, the system flags the call as suspicious.

The 'Phone by Google' app then displays a warning message on the call receiver's screen.

Users are advised to disconnect the call immediately to avoid falling prey to fraudsters.

This verification process aims to reduce the risk of spoofed calls, where scammers use someone else's phone number to disguise their identity.

Better privacy and security

Google has also emphasized user privacy. This feature uses Rich Communication Services (RCS) technology with end-to-end encryption. This ensures that the verification process is secure and user data is protected.
