Gurpurab: Big B calls himself 'Amitabh Singh', why did he make the announcement on KBC

On Guru Nanak Jayanti, we're remembering Amitabh Bachchan's statement when he described himself as a half-Sardar. Amitabh Bachchan spoke about his Sikh heritage, recalling his mother's Punjabi heritage and his maternal uncle's role as a gurdwara manager.

When in an episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati, Amitabh Bachchan openly talked about himself as half Sardar and this heritage. Amitabh Bachchan calls himself half Sikh, he also loves his mother tongue i.e. Punjab very much, his mother was from a Sikh family.

"I think I'm half a chieftain..."

Big B, known as the Millennium Star of Kaun Banega Crorepati, spoke openly about his parents' marriage. He explained how he feels a little uncomfortable calling his relationship "intercaste." Speaking to contestant Kirti, he said, "My father was from Uttar Pradesh and my mother was from a Sikh family in Punjab. They have had a huge influence on me. I believe I am half Sardar. When I was born, everyone in my family used to say, 'Kinna Sona Puttar Hai, Sadda Amitabh Singh.'"

Amitabh Bachchan reveals his Sikh heritage

Speaking about his Sikh heritage, Amitabh Bachchan said that last year, during Guru Purnima, he shared some information on Facebook about his childhood in Allahabad, and especially about his mother. He wrote, "Those early years in Allahabad, when my mother would whisper in my ears the eternal, sacred and divine words of Gurbani... 'Tati vaar na jaave...' As you know, my mother was a Sikh, Teji Kaur Suri, my grandfather Sardar Khazan Singh Suri, my grandmother a Sodi, and whose family, her brother and my maternal uncle were the managers of the Anantapur Sahib Gurdwara..."

Amitabh Bachchan is the son of a Hindu father and a Sikh mother.

Amitabh's father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was a Hindi poet and writer, author of Madhushala. A prominent figure in the Nayi Kavita literary movement, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1976. He had a love marriage with Teji Singh.
