As a new year begins, many people promise themselves a healthier, fitter lifestyle. But very often, enthusiasm fades after a few days and old habits return. The truth is, staying healthy does not require drastic changes or complicated routines. What really works are small, simple habits that can be followed consistently throughout the year.
Recently, nutritionist Deepsikha Jain shared a video on social media highlighting five easy rules that anyone can adopt in daily life. These habits focus on balance, consistency, and long-term wellbeing rather than short-term fixes.
Here are the five healthy rules she recommends:
-
Keep healthy foods in your fridge
The first step toward healthy eating begins at home. Clear your refrigerator of junk and ultra-processed foods, and stock it with fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole foods. Your fridge should support good choices, not tempt you into unhealthy ones. While packaged “healthy” products are okay occasionally, fresh and minimally processed foods should be your priority. -
Run more or stay physically active
Regular movement is essential for both physical and mental health. According to Deepsikha, even a light 10-minute run can significantly improve mood and reduce stress. Simple activities like brisk walking, jogging, or stretching help activate the brain areas linked to emotional balance and mental clarity. -
Include prebiotic and probiotic foods
Gut health plays a major role in overall wellbeing. To keep your digestive system strong, include both prebiotic and probiotic foods in your diet. Foods like curd, buttermilk, idli, dosa, kanji, dhokla, pickles, green peas, beets, apples, and whole wheat bread help nourish good gut bacteria and improve digestion. -
Make sleeping early a habit
Late nights and poor sleep increase cortisol, the stress hormone, which can lead to inflammation and long-term health issues. Going to bed on time allows the body to rest, repair, and balance hormones naturally. Quality sleep is one of the most underrated pillars of good health. -
Write down your goals
One powerful yet simple habit is writing down your goals every day. This keeps you focused, motivated, and accountable. Whether your goals are related to fitness, diet, or personal growth, putting them on paper strengthens commitment and makes them feel more achievable.
