Kajal plays an important role in enhancing eye makeup. It not only adds depth and beauty to the eyes but is also traditionally believed to help keep the eyes clean. However, many kajals available in the market today contain chemicals that can cause burning, itching, redness, and irritation—especially for people with sensitive eyes. Some products also smudge easily, ruining the entire makeup look. Even so-called waterproof kajals often rely on harsh ingredients that may harm the eyes in the long run.
In such a situation, making kajal at home is a safe and effective alternative. Homemade desi kajal is natural, gentle on the eyes, and free from harmful chemicals. If you love kajal but struggle with irritation or smudging, this simple Ayurvedic method can be a great solution.
How to make desi kajal at home
To prepare natural kajal, take a small diya or a steel bowl. Add pure ghee or coconut oil and place a cotton wick in it. Light the diya and then place a clean steel plate or bowl upside down over the flame, leaving some space for air circulation. Let the flame burn for a while so that black soot collects on the plate.
Once enough soot has gathered, carefully scrape it off using a clean spoon. Add 10–12 drops of pure ghee or almond oil to the soot and mix well until it forms a smooth paste. Your chemical-free, homemade kajal is now ready to use.
Benefits of homemade desi kajal
Because desi kajal is made from natural ingredients, it does not cause burning, itching, or redness in the eyes. The ghee or oil used in it helps keep the eyes cool and moisturised. Regular use may help reduce eye dryness and fatigue. It is considered a safer option for people with sensitive eyes and is often preferred for children as well.
How to apply desi kajal correctly
Before applying kajal, wash your hands thoroughly and make sure the eye area is clean. Using a clean kajal stick, cotton bud, or fingertip, take a small amount of kajal and gently apply it to the waterline. Avoid applying too much, as excess kajal can spread or smudge. A thin layer is enough to enhance the eyes naturally.
