Honda Cars India is preparing to expand its product lineup with several new models aimed specifically at Indian customers. The company is moving towards developing products that better suit local preferences, with particular attention to the fast-growing SUV market.
As part of its strategy, Honda plans to introduce multiple new models in India by 2030, including products in the sub-4-metre and midsize SUV categories.
New Honda Compact SUV Expected by 2028
Honda is reportedly planning a new sub-4-metre SUV for the Indian market, with a launch targeted by 2028.
Once introduced, the SUV would enter a highly competitive segment and take on popular models such as the Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite.
Honda has indicated that the upcoming model will be designed and developed with Indian customers and market conditions in mind. However, details such as its price, features and engine specifications have not yet been announced.
The new SUV would also mark Honda's return to the sub-4-metre SUV space after the discontinuation of models such as the WR-V.
What Could Power the New Honda SUV?
Honda has not yet confirmed the powertrain options for its upcoming compact SUV.
Reports suggest that the model could use Honda's Global Small Car Platform or another modular architecture capable of supporting different powertrains.
Depending on the final product strategy, possible options could include a petrol engine, hybrid technology or an electric powertrain. However, Honda has yet to confirm which of these options will be offered in India.
Honda Elevate Facelift Also in the Pipeline
The compact SUV will not be Honda's only upcoming product for India. The company is also preparing an updated version of the Elevate.
The Elevate facelift is expected to receive styling and feature updates, although major mechanical changes are not currently expected. Its existing petrol engine could continue to be offered.
Honda 0 Alpha Electric SUV Could Follow
Honda is also preparing the 0 Alpha electric SUV for the Indian market. The model is expected to compete in the growing electric SUV segment against vehicles such as the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara, Hyundai Creta Electric, Tata Sierra EV and MG ZS EV.
The arrival of an electric SUV would give Honda a presence in another rapidly developing part of India's passenger vehicle market.
Could Civic, Accord and CR-V Return to India?
Honda could also consider bringing some of its global models back to India. Reports have pointed towards models such as the Civic, Accord and CR-V potentially returning, possibly through the completely built-up unit (CBU) route.
Hybrid powertrains are also reportedly being considered for these models.
The Honda Prelude hybrid sports car is another model that could potentially make its way to India as a limited or halo product. Such a model would be aimed not only at sales but also at showcasing Honda's technology and performance credentials.
Honda’s India Portfolio Is Set for a Major Expansion
With a new compact SUV, an updated Elevate, an upcoming electric SUV and the possible return of premium global models, Honda is preparing for a broader product strategy in India.
For now, the upcoming sub-4-metre SUV remains one of the more significant products in the pipeline, but its final design, engine options, features, pricing and exact launch date are yet to be officially announced.
