What is WhatsApp Archive Chat Feature?

The Archive Chat feature on WhatsApp allows users to hide individual or group conversations without deleting them. When you archive a chat, it disappears from your main Chats list but remains saved in a separate section.

Previously, archived chats would automatically return to the main chat list whenever a new message arrived. However, WhatsApp has introduced an update that keeps archived chats hidden even when new messages arrive, and users can no longer receive notifications for those chats. This makes it easier to keep conversations private without permanently deleting them.

How to archive or hide chats on WhatsApp

Step 1: Open WhatsApp and go to the chat you want to hide.
Step 2: Tap and hold the chat. A few options will appear at the top of the screen, such as Delete, Pin, Mute, and Archive.
Step 3: Select the Archive option.
Step 4: Once archived, the chat will move to the Archived section at the top of your chat list. Whenever you want to view the hidden chat, tap the Archived section.

How to unarchive chats on WhatsApp

Step 2: Tap and hold the chat you want to restore.
