India Goes Electric! EV Sales Jump 52.9% in One Year, Setting a New August Record

Electric vehicles are rapidly becoming a bigger part of India's automobile market, and the latest sales figures show just how quickly the shift is happening.

According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), 298,448 electric vehicles were sold across India in August 2026. That's a massive 52.9% increase compared with August 2025, when 195,413 EVs were sold.

The growth has also pushed EVs' share of India's total vehicle sales to 12.3%, up from 9.5% during the same month last year.

FADA President Sai Giridhar described August 2026 as the best August ever for electric mobility in India, with all four major EV categories recording their highest-ever August sales.

Electric two-wheelers lead the EV revolution

Electric scooters and motorcycles continue to dominate India's EV market.

In August 2026, 183,204 electric two-wheelers were sold, compared with 109,673 units in August 2025. That's a year-on-year growth of 67.05%.

Electric two-wheelers now account for more than 60% of total EV sales, highlighting their growing popularity among urban commuters.

Their relatively lower running costs, easy manoeuvrability in traffic and expanding charging infrastructure are helping more buyers consider electric two-wheelers as an alternative to petrol-powered models.

Electric car sales also rise sharply

Electric passenger vehicles also recorded strong growth.

In August 2026, 30,696 electric cars were sold, compared with 20,210 units in August 2025. This represents a growth of around 52% in one year.

The share of electric passenger vehicles in the overall passenger-vehicle market has also increased to 7.6%.

The growing availability of EVs across different price segments is giving consumers more choices, while concerns around fuel costs are encouraging some buyers to consider electric alternatives.

Electric three-wheelers continue to gain ground

Electric three-wheelers recorded another significant increase.

A total of 79,846 electric three-wheelers were sold in August 2026, compared with 63,736 units during the same month last year. This represents a 25.28% year-on-year increase.

Electric three-wheelers now have a 65.3% share of the electric three-wheeler market, making electrification particularly strong in this segment.

Commercial EV sales nearly triple

The biggest percentage growth came from electric commercial vehicles.

Sales increased from just 1,631 units in August 2025 to 4,702 units in August 2026. That's an increase of more than 180%, meaning sales nearly tripled in a year.

The rapid growth indicates that electrification isn't limited to private cars and scooters. Commercial operators are also increasingly exploring EVs, particularly where lower operating costs can make a significant difference.

All major EV segments hit records

The August numbers reveal a broader trend rather than growth in just one category.

According to FADA, all four major electric-vehicle categories recorded new sales records for the month of August.

Electric two-wheelers remain the biggest contributor, but passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and commercial EVs are all expanding their presence.

India's EV market at a glance

EV segment August 2025 August 2026 Growth
Electric 2-wheelers 109,673 183,204 67.05%
Electric passenger vehicles 20,210 30,696 ~52%
Electric 3-wheelers 63,736 79,846 25.28%
Electric commercial vehicles 1,631 4,702 ~188%

What does this mean for India's auto market?

The latest figures suggest that EVs are moving beyond being a niche choice in India.

With nearly 3 lakh electric vehicles sold in a single month, consumers across multiple categories are increasingly considering electric mobility. Two-wheelers remain at the forefront, while electric cars and commercial vehicles are also gaining momentum.

If this growth continues, EVs could take an even larger share of India's vehicle market in the coming years, further accelerating the country's transition away from conventional petrol and diesel vehicles.
