Indus Water Treaty: When India completes its project, it will be able to divert 150 cubic meters of water per second, whereas currently it can divert only about 40 cubic meters of water.
Indus Water Treaty: After the Indian government suspended the Indus Water Treaty, there is panic among the people of Pakistan. Pakistan is dependent on the water of the Indus River for 80 percent of its agriculture. India is going to stop Pakistan's water under the new Indus Project, due to which the people there are scared.
India's project gives shock to Pakistan
According to a Reuters report, since the Indus Water Treaty was suspended after the Pahalgam terrorist attack on April 22, the work on the projects on Chenab, Jhelum and Indus rivers has been expedited. One of the main projects in this area is to double the length of the Ranbir Dam on the Chenab River to 120 kilometers. The water of this river passes through India to Pakistan's agricultural region Punjab.
According to the report, when India completes its project, it will be able to divert 150 cubic meters of water per second, whereas currently it can divert only about 40 cubic meters of water. Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said in the National Assembly that his government has written a letter to India asking it to reconsider the Indus Water Treaty. He told his MPs that this action of India is illegal.
Pakistan will crave for electricity due to India's action
David Mitchell, a water security expert at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, said that it will take time for India to build dams, canals or other infrastructure. However, he warned the neighboring country that Pakistan has realized what kind of pressure it may have to face from India.
Along with the plan to expand the Ranbir Canal, India is also considering projects that will reduce the flow of water from the rivers allotted to Pakistan. Due to this, Pakistan will face a lot of problems in generating electricity for itself.
India made a list of hydroelectric projects - report
According to the report, India has prepared a list of hydroelectric projects in the Jammu and Kashmir region, which will increase the power output from 3,360 MW to 12,000 MW. These projects also include dams that can store large amounts of water, which will be a first for India in the Indus river system.
PM Modi has clearly said that water and blood cannot flow together. Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Tuesday (May 13, 2025) that India will suspend the Indus Water Treaty until Pakistan stops supporting terrorism.
