New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Winston Peters is on a visit to India from 29 to 30 May. This information was shared by the Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday. According to the ministry, Peters will arrive in Delhi at IGI Terminal 3 at 3:35 pm on Thursday. After this, he will meet External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar at Hotel Taj Mahal at 6:30 pm. At the same hotel, Peters will meet Union Health and Family Welfare Minister JP Nadda at 3:30 pm on May 30. After this, he will leave for New Zealand at 9:55 pm.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, India and New Zealand have historically had close and cordial relations. For example, membership of the Commonwealth, similar legal practices and shared desires to bring economic development and prosperity from democratic governance systems for diverse communities give both countries an excellent background to deepen friendly relations. Like India, New Zealand is one of the most ethnically diverse countries in the world with 213 castes. Tourism and sporting ties between the two countries, especially cricket, hockey and mountaineering, have greatly fostered goodwill.
The two countries also share a commitment to human rights, global peace, rules-based international order, ecological conservation, and combating terrorism. People-to-people contacts have been growing between the two countries since migration from India began around the 1860s. There are about 300,000 people of Indian origin and NRIs in New Zealand. Most of these have made New Zealand their permanent home. India and New Zealand have shared important high-level visits in the last few years and this has also strengthened bilateral ties.
