Indigenous UAV 'Rudrastra' Successfully Tested, Set to Enhance India's Defensive Capabilities

In a significant stride towards strengthening India's indigenous defense technology, Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited (SDAL) has successfully conducted trials of its advanced hybrid VTOL UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) 'Rudrastra' at the Pokhran Firing Range. The tests, conducted on June 11, 2025, met the stringent requirements and technical standards set by the Indian Army, indicating the UAV's readiness to tackle challenging operational scenarios.

During the trials, 'Rudrastra' demonstrated impressive capabilities, covering a mission radius of over 50 km and successfully returning to its launch point while maintaining a stable, real-time video link. The UAV achieved a total flight range exceeding 170 km and sustained continuous flight for approximately 1.5 hours, showcasing its endurance and reach.

Key Features of 'Rudrastra' include:

  • VTOL (Vertical Takeoff and Landing) Capability: This crucial feature allows the UAV to take off and land vertically, eliminating the need for a runway. This makes 'Rudrastra' highly adaptable for operations in diverse and challenging terrains, including remote and border areas.
  • Extreme Range and Endurance: The drone's ability to cover over 170 kilometers while loitering over a target area and maintain flight for approximately 1.5 hours highlights its extended operational capabilities.
  • Accurate Surveillance and Targeting: Equipped with a real-time video link, 'Rudrastra' can transmit clear and stable imagery to the control center, enabling precise surveillance and effective monitoring of enemy movements.
  • Mission Flexibility: The UAV's design allows for quick adaptation to various military missions, making it a valuable asset for reconnaissance, target acquisition, and offensive operations.

This successful demonstration marks a pivotal moment in India's journey towards self-reliance in defense. 'Rudrastra' is expected to significantly enhance the army's capabilities in responding swiftly, accurately, and safely to threats such as cross-border infiltration, terrorist activities, and other high-risk operations. The development of 'Rudrastra' is seen as a robust step towards achieving a 'Self-reliant India' in defense.
