Instagram’s latest feature, called “Instants,” is quickly becoming a talking point among social media users worldwide. The platform introduced the feature to encourage more spontaneous and authentic photo sharing, but many users are already raising concerns over privacy and accidental sharing issues.
The new feature allows photos to disappear automatically after 24 hours, creating a more casual way to communicate with friends. While Instagram describes the update as a step toward “real and unfiltered” interactions, several users claim the feature’s design is causing confusion and leading to unintended photo sharing.

What Is Instagram Instants?
Instagram launched Instants as a disappearing-photo feature integrated directly into the app. The concept is similar to temporary photo-sharing systems already popular on platforms like Snapchat.
The goal behind Instants is to encourage users to share everyday moments without worrying too much about filters, editing, or creating perfectly curated posts. Photos shared through Instants vanish automatically after 24 hours, making the experience more casual and temporary.
Instagram has also introduced a standalone “Instants” application alongside the in-app feature, aiming to expand its ecosystem of private and quick social sharing.
However, despite the company’s intentions, the rollout has not gone smoothly for many users.
Why Are Users Upset With the Feature?
The biggest concern revolves around the default sharing settings inside Instants.
When users open the feature for the first time, the app immediately launches the camera interface. At the bottom of the screen, users can choose between two sharing groups:
Friends
Close Friends
The issue is that the feature reportedly remains set to “Friends” by default. Because of this, many users unknowingly share photos with everyone they follow back rather than only sending them to selected contacts.
Several users online have complained that they believed the images were simply being previewed or saved, only to later discover that the photos had already been shared with their full friend list.
The confusion has triggered criticism, especially from users concerned about privacy and accidental oversharing.
Instagram’s Push for More Authentic Content
The launch of Instants reflects a broader shift among social media companies toward “real-time” and less-polished content.
In recent years, platforms have increasingly focused on authentic engagement rather than highly edited posts. Temporary content formats, disappearing messages, and quick photo-sharing tools have become especially popular among younger users.
Instagram appears to be positioning Instants as a way to compete more aggressively in this space while encouraging users to share more frequently.
Still, many users believe clearer warnings and better controls should have been included before enabling automatic sharing settings.
How to Disable Instagram Instants
Users who do not wish to use the feature can turn it off through Instagram settings.
To disable Instants:
Open the Instagram app
Visit your profile page
Tap the three-line menu in the top-right corner
Open “Settings”
Select “Content Preferences”
Turn on the option called “Hide Instants in Inbox”
Once activated, the feature disappears from the inbox section, and users will also stop seeing Instants shared by others.
Temporary Mute Option Also Available
For users who do not want to completely disable the feature, Instagram provides another option.
Inside the inbox, users can press and hold the Instants section and swipe it toward the right side. This temporarily hides notifications and reduces interruptions related to the feature.
Can Accidentally Shared Photos Be Deleted?
Instagram does allow users to remove photos that were mistakenly shared through Instants.
The app includes a dedicated Instants gallery where users can manage and delete previously shared content. However, there is currently one important limitation — deleting a photo removes it for everyone at once.
At present, Instagram does not offer an option to selectively delete a photo for only one specific viewer.
Privacy Debate Continues
The controversy surrounding Instants highlights the growing debate over privacy controls on social media platforms. Many users appreciate features that promote quick and casual communication, but they also expect transparency and clear sharing permissions.
As Instagram continues refining the feature, users are likely to demand stronger privacy settings, better default controls, and clearer notifications before content is shared automatically.
