Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu officially confirmed on May 28 that Hamas commander Mohammed Sinwar was killed in an Israeli airstrike on May 13. Defense Minister Yoav Katz had earlier claimed Sinwar’s death, but this statement marks the first official confirmation from the Israeli government.
The airstrike targeted a Hamas tunnel complex beneath a hospital in Gaza, where Sinwar was suspected to be hiding. Alongside Sinwar, it is highly likely that his aides—including Rafah Brigade chief Muhammad Shabanah, a potential successor—also died in the attack.
Mohammed Sinwar had recently taken over Hamas leadership following the death of his brother Yahya Sinwar, who was killed by Israeli forces and was considered the mastermind behind the 7 October attacks.
Despite heavy losses to its leadership during Israel’s 19-month campaign, Hamas continues to resist Israeli forces in Gaza, though no clear successor to Sinwar has yet emerged.
