Kartik Purnima is one of the most revered days in Sanatan Dharma, marking the spiritual climax of the sacred month of Kartik. Throughout this month, acts like bathing in holy rivers, offering donations, and lighting lamps hold immense religious significance. However, the full moon day of Kartik Purnima carries even greater spiritual importance. According to scriptures, taking a dip in the Ganges or other sacred rivers on this day yields virtues equivalent to performing one hundred Ashwamedha Yagyas. In 2025, the Kartik Purnima fast, holy bath, and donation rituals will be observed on Wednesday, November 5, as per the lunar calendar.
Why Bathing and Donating on Kartik Purnima Is Considered So Special
On Kartik Purnima, it is believed that all gods and goddesses descend to Earth and bathe in the holy rivers, especially the Ganges. This divine occurrence is said to make the waters of the Ganga nectar-like, purifying and sanctifying all who bathe in it. Those who take a dip in these sacred waters on this day are believed to receive divine blessings and freedom from all sins.
The Significance of Tripurari Purnima
Kartik Purnima is also celebrated as Tripuri Purnima or Tripurari Purnima, commemorating Lord Shiva’s victory over the demon Tripurasura, who had long troubled the gods. To celebrate this triumph, the gods lit lamps in Kashi (Varanasi), marking the beginning of Dev Diwali—the festival of lights for the gods. This day is considered especially auspicious, as it brings the blessings of both Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu.
Lord Vishnu’s Matsya Avatar
According to Hindu scriptures, Kartik Purnima is also the day when Lord Vishnu took the Matsya Avatar (fish incarnation) to save the Vedas and the universe during the great flood. Hence, devotees worship Lord Vishnu on this day to attain happiness, prosperity, and ultimate salvation.
The Path to Salvation
The month of Kartik is also known as the month of salvation (moksha). Bathing, fasting, and donating on Kartik Purnima are believed to free one from the cycle of birth and death. It is said that bathing in the Brahma Muhurta—the early hours before sunrise—on this day can wash away all sins from both this life and past lives.
Importance of Donations on Kartik Purnima
Charity holds special spiritual value on Kartik Purnima. The scriptures say that donating within one’s capacity on this day brings boundless blessings, happiness, and prosperity.
-
Food and Monetary Donations: Offering food, clothes, money, or essentials to the needy or to Brahmins pleases Goddess Lakshmi and invites prosperity.
-
Deepdaan (Lamp Offering): As Kartik Purnima is also Dev Diwali, lighting lamps near holy rivers, temples, or sacred trees like Peepal and Tulsi is said to dispel darkness and attract positivity.
-
Cow Donation: If possible, donating a cow on this day is considered the most sacred form of charity, bringing immense spiritual merit.
