In Hindu scriptures, Kharmas is considered an inauspicious period for starting major शुभ कार्य (auspicious works). Kharmas lasts for about one month and is also known in common usage as Malmas in some regions.
According to belief, when Surya Dev (the Sun) enters Dhanu Rashi (Sagittarius)—the zodiac sign ruled by Jupiter—his radiance weakens. Because of this, auspicious results are said to diminish during this time.
When is Kharmas starting in 2025?
-
Start: December 16, 2025 at 10:19 PM
-
Reason: Sun transits from Scorpio to Sagittarius (Dhanu Sankranti)
-
End: January 14, 2026, when the Sun enters Capricorn (Makar Sankranti)
This means that after tonight, no auspicious ceremonies will be performed for the next 30 days.
What work is stopped during Kharmas?
During Kharmas, the following auspicious events are traditionally avoided:
-
Marriage (Vivah)
-
Griha Pravesh (housewarming)
-
Mundan (tonsure ceremony)
-
Upanayan Sanskar
-
Naming ceremonies (Naamkaran)
-
Starting new ventures or शुभ मुहूर्त rituals
It is believed that such works do not give full results if performed during Kharmas.
Why auspicious work is avoided
Scriptures mention that during Kharmas:
-
The Sun’s energy is weakened
-
शुभ कार्य lose their फल (desired outcomes)
-
The period is meant for self-discipline, restraint, and reflection
Hence, instead of material beginnings, spiritual practices are preferred.
What should be done during Kharmas?
Although Kharmas is not suitable for auspicious ceremonies, it is considered very powerful for devotion and worship.
Recommended spiritual activities:
-
Worship of Lord Vishnu, Lord Krishna, and Surya Dev
-
Chanting Ram Naam
-
Reciting Bhagavad Gita
-
Chanting Vishnu Sahasranama
-
Meditation, fasting, and charity
These practices are believed to bring spiritual growth and divine blessings during Kharmas.
