Former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi has confirmed that the owners of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) are planning to sell the franchise after their maiden IPL title win in 2025. Previously surrounded by rumors, the sale is now reportedly moving forward with Diageo Plc, the current owner through United Spirits Ltd., deciding to remove RCB from their balance sheet and seek potential buyers.
Modi highlighted RCB’s strong fan base, excellent team management, and recent success as factors making it one of the most attractive investments in the IPL. He believes major global funds or sovereign wealth funds would be eager to incorporate RCB into their portfolio, especially as part of an India-focused strategy. According to him, this opportunity offers unmatched investment potential.
Speaking on a recent podcast with former Australian captain Michael Clarke, Lalit Modi estimated RCB’s valuation at nearly $2 billion currently, with an expected annual growth of $500 million. He advised that if the sale happens next year, it could fetch around $2.5 billion and rise even higher in subsequent years, potentially reaching $4 billion in four years. He warned potential sellers against undervaluing the franchise.
The RCB franchise holds a unique place in IPL history, featuring cricket legends like Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, and Virat Kohli, with Kohli being synonymous with RCB since its inception. The team’s long-awaited IPL title in 2025 has only boosted its marketability and appeal to potential investors.
If completed, the RCB sale could redefine franchise valuations across the IPL, reinforcing its status as one of the world’s fastest-growing and most valuable sports leagues.
