Lohri is one of the most vibrant festivals celebrated in Punjab. As evening falls, families and friends gather around the bonfire, offer rewari, peanuts, and corn to the fire, dance to Bhangra and Gidda, and enjoy a joyful, party-like atmosphere. And when there’s a celebration, delicious food is a must.
This Lohri, surprise your guests with a rich and comforting sesame kheer (Til Ki Kheer). Sesame seeds are considered a superfood in winter—they keep the body warm and are packed with protein, healthy fats, and minerals. While sesame laddus are common, sesame kheer is creamy, aromatic, and feels extra special for a festive evening.
Here’s a simple recipe you can easily prepare at home.
Ingredients (for 4–5 people)
-
Milk – 1 liter
-
Sesame seeds (til) – 1 cup
-
Sugar – ½ cup (adjust to taste)
-
Almonds – 10–12
-
Cashews – 10–12
-
Green cardamom powder – 1 teaspoon
-
Grated coconut – 2 tablespoons
-
Ghee – 1 tablespoon
-
Optional nuts: pistachios, raisins, or any dry fruits of your choice
How to make Sesame Kheer
-
Clean the sesame seeds thoroughly to remove any dirt or pebbles.
-
Dry roast the sesame seeds on low heat, stirring continuously so they don’t burn. Once they turn light golden and release a nutty aroma, remove them to a plate.
-
Lightly grind the roasted sesame seeds using a mortar and pestle or mixer—keep the texture coarse. This enhances both flavor and texture.
-
Chop almonds, cashews, and other nuts into small pieces and keep aside.
-
In a heavy-bottomed pan, bring the milk to a boil. Add the crushed sesame seeds and grated coconut.
-
Cook on low heat, stirring occasionally, until the kheer begins to thicken.
-
Add sugar and continue cooking until it dissolves completely and the kheer reaches a creamy consistency.
-
In a small pan, heat ghee and lightly roast the chopped nuts. Add them to the kheer along with cardamom powder. Mix well.
