If you use a domestic LPG cylinder, there is an important government update you should know about. Aadhaar biometric authentication is being made mandatory for domestic LPG consumers who want to continue receiving LPG at the regulated subsidised price from October 1, 2026.

The government says the move is aimed at ensuring that subsidised cooking gas reaches eligible consumers and preventing duplicate or ineligible connections.

Who needs to complete the authentication?

Domestic LPG consumers who have not yet completed Aadhaar biometric authentication should complete the process before booking their next subsidised refill.

According to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry, around 89.9% of the country's 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers had completed biometric authentication as of September 19, 2026.

If you have already completed the authentication, you do not need to repeat the process.

How can you complete Aadhaar biometric authentication?

Consumers have several options:

• During LPG cylinder delivery

• By visiting their LPG distributor's showroom

• Through the official mobile applications of the oil marketing companies

For example, Indane consumers can use IndianOil ONE, Bharatgas consumers can use HelloBPCL, and HP Gas consumers can use HP PAY.

What happens if you don't complete it?

Consumers who do not complete Aadhaar biometric authentication can still receive LPG, but they may have to purchase the cylinder at the applicable market price without the subsidy.

Therefore, households that depend on subsidised LPG should complete the authentication process before the deadline rather than waiting until the last moment.

Why has the government introduced this requirement?

The government says biometric authentication will help prevent the diversion of subsidised domestic LPG cylinders for commercial or industrial use. It is also intended to identify duplicate and ineligible connections.

The move is part of a broader effort to make LPG subsidy delivery more targeted and reduce leakage.

How much subsidy is involved?

The government continues to provide substantial support to keep domestic LPG affordable. According to the Petroleum Ministry, the implicit subsidy on a 14.2-kg cylinder was around ₹210 in September 2026.

The government has also budgeted ₹30,000 crore annually in 2025-26 and 2026-27 to compensate public-sector oil marketing companies for domestic LPG under-recoveries.
