Mahabharata Story: How an Apsara’s Curse Forced Arjuna to Live as a Eunuch for One Year

The Mahabharata is not just the tale of a great war but also a treasure of deep characters, moral lessons, and lesser-known stories. One such surprising episode is linked to Arjuna, one of the greatest warriors among the Pandavas. Few people know that Arjuna once had to live as a eunuch for an entire year due to the curse of a celestial nymph.

This episode reveals how destiny, curses, and divine plans shaped even the lives of the mightiest heroes.

Arjuna’s quest for divine weapons

During their exile, the Pandavas were preparing for the inevitable Kurukshetra war. Arjuna realized that to defeat powerful warriors like Bhishma, Drona, and Karna, he would need divine weapons. To achieve this, he undertook intense penance to please the gods.

Pleased with his devotion, Indra, Arjuna’s father and the king of gods, advised him to first obtain Lord Shiva’s blessings. Arjuna performed severe penance and was granted the powerful Pashupatastra by Lord Shiva. After this, Arjuna was welcomed to heaven, where Indra bestowed upon him several divine weapons.

Urvashi’s proposal and the curse

While in heaven, Arjuna encountered Urvashi, the most beautiful celestial apsara. Enchanted by Arjuna’s valor and personality, Urvashi expressed her desire to be with him.

However, Arjuna respectfully refused her proposal. He considered Urvashi like a mother figure, as she had once been married to King Pururava, an ancestor of the Kuru dynasty. Urvashi took this rejection as an insult. Enraged, she cursed Arjuna to lose his masculinity and live as an impotent person.

Indra turns the curse into a blessing

Disturbed by the curse, Arjuna approached Indra for help. Indra explained that the curse could not be completely removed but could be limited in duration. The curse would affect Arjuna for only one year — a year that would later prove crucial.

During the Pandavas’ final year of exile, which had to be spent in complete anonymity, Arjuna used this curse to his advantage.

Arjuna as Brihannala

In the kingdom of Matsya, Arjuna lived disguised as Brihannala, a eunuch skilled in music and dance. He served in the palace of King Virata and taught dance and fine arts to Princess Uttara. During the same period, the other Pandavas and Draupadi also lived in disguise under different identities.

By the end of the one-year incognito exile, the curse ended, Arjuna regained his warrior form, and the Pandavas revealed their true identities.

Significance of this episode

This story highlights how even curses in the Mahabharata often serve a higher purpose. What seemed like a punishment ultimately became a shield that protected Arjuna and the Pandavas during their most vulnerable phase.
