Maharshi Dadhichi: Karna and King Bali Were Great Donors, but This Sage Defined the True Meaning of Mahadaan

Hindu religious scriptures vividly describe the great philanthropists of ancient India. Whenever generosity and sacrifice are discussed, Karna is often the first name that comes to mind. The son of Surya Dev and Kunti, Karna was renowned not only for his valor in the Mahabharata but also for his unmatched charity. After offering prayers to the Sun God, Karna would donate whatever was asked of him—without hesitation. Taking advantage of this virtue, Lord Indra appeared before him and asked for his divine armor and earrings, which Karna willingly gave.

Similarly, King Bali, the grandson of Prahlad, is remembered as a supreme donor. When Lord Vishnu incarnated as Vamana, he asked Bali for just three steps of land. As soon as the king agreed, Vamana measured the earth in one step and the heavens in the second. With no space left, King Bali humbly offered his own head for the third step. Pleased by his devotion and sacrifice, Lord Vishnu granted him sovereignty over the netherworld.

The acts of Karna and King Bali are considered unparalleled, yet Hindu scriptures speak of a sage whose donation surpassed even these legendary sacrifices.

The Story of Maharshi Dadhichi

According to Hindu texts, Maharshi Dadhichi is revered as the greatest donor of all time. His mother was Chiti and his father Atharva. A devoted worshipper of Lord Shiva, Maharshi Dadhichi was a profound scholar of the Vedas and led a life of intense penance for the welfare of humanity.

The radiance generated by his austerities illuminated all three worlds, which gradually diminished the brilliance of Devaraj Indra. Consumed by jealousy, Indra attempted to disturb the sage’s penance by sending Kamadeva and celestial nymphs, but all efforts failed. Eventually, Indra himself arrived with weapons, yet none could harm the sage, protected as he was by the power of his spiritual discipline. Defeated, Indra returned to heaven.

Soon after, the demon Vritrasura captured Devaloka and drove the gods out, plunging the universe into chaos.

Why Maharshi Dadhichi’s Donation Is Called ‘Mahadaan’

Helpless, the gods approached Lord Brahma, who revealed that Vritrasura could only be slain by a weapon forged from the bones of Maharshi Dadhichi. With great hesitation, Indra approached the sage and explained the situation, requesting his bones for the protection of the three worlds.

Without sorrow or attachment, Maharshi Dadhichi agreed. Through the power of yoga, he voluntarily gave up his body, offering his bones as a supreme sacrifice. From these bones, a divine thunderbolt known as Vajra (Tejvan) was created.

Using this weapon, Lord Indra destroyed Vritrasura, restoring peace to the universe and returning the gods to their celestial abode.

The True Essence of Mahadaan

While Karna gave away his armor and King Bali surrendered his kingdom and body, Maharshi Dadhichi sacrificed his very life for the welfare of gods and humanity alike. This selfless act, performed without expectation of reward, is why his donation is revered as the greatest Mahadaan in Hindu tradition.
