The central government has taken an important step in view of the increasing tension with Pakistan. The Home Ministry has ordered all states and union territories to conduct a mock drill tomorrow, May 7. The main purpose of this exercise is to train citizens to protect themselves in case of war or any other attack.
Practice will be done in 244 districts
This mock drill will be conducted in 244 identified districts of the country. The government's aim is to further strengthen the preparations of civil defense. Let us tell you that the last such mock drill in India was conducted in 1971.

Why do war sirens sound ?
War sirens are sounded to alert people in case of any disaster or emergency. It is a loud warning system with a very intense sound. The sound of these sirens can be heard up to a distance of 2 to 5 kilometers and they produce a sound of 120-140 decibels. Their sound has a special rhythm - it gradually becomes louder and then gradually decreases.
What to do when the siren sounds ?
The following are the steps that citizens should take when the siren sounds during a mock drill or in an actual emergency:
- Move to safe places immediately.
- Try to reach a safe place within 5 to 10 minutes.
- Do not panic when the siren sounds.
- Move away from open areas immediately.
- Move inside homes and other safe buildings.
- Pay attention to TV, radio and government alerts.
- Do not believe any rumours and follow the instructions issued by the administration.
Where will the sirens be installed ?
These sirens will be installed mainly at government buildings, administrative offices, police headquarters, fire stations, military bases, major markets of the city and other crowded places.
Who will participate in the civil mock drill ?
The mock drill will be attended by district officials, local administration officials, civil defence wardens, policemen, home guards, college and school students, members of the National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS) and Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS).
