Nail Pierced Girl’s Neck and Reached Brain — How Doctors Saved Her Life

A 7-year-old girl from Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh, suffered a terrifying injury when an 8-cm thin nail pierced through her neck and entered her brain, causing severe damage to her neck and jaw.
Critical Emergency and Complex Surgery

The girl was first taken to a private hospital, then the district hospital, but her condition required advanced care.

She was admitted unconscious to the Trauma Center at King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow on May 16 at around 2 am.

The nail had traveled through her neck and mouth into her brain, requiring urgent surgery by a multidisciplinary team including ENT, neurosurgery, and trauma specialists.
The Operation

A team of 14 doctors, led by Dr. Sameer Mishra and Dr. Vaibhav Jaiswal, performed a challenging 4-hour surgery the same night.

The procedure involved careful removal of the nail without causing further damage.

Post-surgery, the girl was kept on ventilator support in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for 10 days due to complications related to her young age and injury severity.
Recovery and Current Condition

After intensive care, the girl’s condition stabilized.

She has now been moved from ICU to a general ward and is reportedly doing well.

The medical team’s combined efforts successfully saved her life against all odds.
