Difference between Narayan Bali and Tripindi Shraddha
Narayan Bali and Tripindi Shraddha difference: The festival of ancestors i.e. Pitru Paksha has begun. On 7 September 2025, Sunday, tarpan was offered to Agastya Rishi. The second day i.e. on Monday, 8 September 2025, is Pratipada Shraddha i.e. the first Shraddha, when people will perform Pinddaan, Tarpan and Shraddha of their ancestors.
In Indian culture, Pitru Karma and Shraddha rituals have special importance. These rituals are mentioned in Rigveda, Garuda Purana, Dharmasindhu, Smriti Granth and Bhavishya Purana. There are two main methods of Shraddha, Narayani Bali and Tripindi Shraddha. Both the methods are for the peace and salvation of the soul of ancestors. But the purpose and process of both are quite different from each other.
What is Narayan Bali?
A religious ritual associated with Pitru Paksha which is performed for the removal of Pitru Dosha and for those who died due to untimely death. If someone dies due to untimely condition, accident, suicide, abortion, violent or abnormal way, then Narayan Bali ritual is performed for the peace of the soul.
This ritual lasts for three days, in which the last rites are performed using an artificial body made of wheat flour. Also, through mantras, the souls get peace by fulfilling their unfulfilled wishes.
Narayan Bali Shraddha Karma is mainly performed at pilgrimage places like Trimbakeshwar (Nashik), Siddhpur (Gujarat), Gaya (Bihar) etc. Narayan Bali is mentioned in the previous section of Garuda Purana, Pret Kalpa and Dharma Sindhu. Without this, the removal of Pitra Dosh is not considered.
What is Tripindi Shraddha?
Tripindi Shraddha means offering Pind Daan to the ancestors of the last three generations. In Tripindi Shraddha, symbolic idols of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are consecrated and duly worshipped. It is believed that if the soul of an ancestor is dissatisfied, it troubles its future generations. In such a situation, Tripindi Shraddha is performed to pacify these souls.
The importance of Tripindi Shraddha has been described in Mahabharata's Anushasana Parva and Gaya Mahatmya. If this ritual is not performed, ancestors may get angry.
Main difference between Narayan Bali and Tripindi Shraddha
Narayan Bali- It is performed for untimely or abnormal death and for the peace of Pitra Dosh.
Tripindi Shraddha- It is performed for the satisfaction and salvation of normal ancestors.
Narayan Bali- It is based on a special pilgrimage place and atonement method.
Tripindi Shraddha- It is a part of the regular Shraddha tradition.
Narayan Bali- It is a way to end the problems of living descendants.
Tripindi Shraddha- It is considered an essential ritual for ancestors.
