Mahindra is preparing a significant update for its popular off-road SUV, the Thar. After receiving minor updates in 2025, the SUV is now expected to get a more comprehensive facelift featuring refreshed styling, additional features and upgraded cabin technology.
The updated Thar has been spotted testing on Indian roads several times, and the latest test vehicle suggests that development could be entering its final stages. If everything goes according to plan, Mahindra could introduce the new model soon.
Major Changes Expected at the Front
The biggest styling updates are expected at the front of the new Thar.
According to spy images, the SUV could get a redesigned grille inspired by the five-door Thar Roxx. The headlights are also expected to receive a major makeover, with round projector LED units featuring distinctive C-shaped LED daytime running lights.
The front bumper could also be redesigned. The SUV may get updated LED fog lamps with a cornering-light function, giving the front profile a more modern appearance while retaining the Thar's familiar rugged character.
Rear Design Likely to Remain Familiar
Unlike the front, the rear of the facelifted Thar is not expected to receive major changes.
The SUV could continue with its familiar side-hinged spare-wheel-mounted tailgate and split-tailgate arrangement. However, subtle updates to the LED taillights and rear bumper could give the rear profile a refreshed appearance.
The side profile is also expected to remain largely unchanged, suggesting that Mahindra's main focus with this facelift is on refreshing the front-end design and upgrading the features.
The SUV could also receive newly designed alloy wheels. The wheels are expected to retain the 18-inch size, but the design could be different from the current model.
More Safety and Convenience Features
The updated Thar could also gain several additional features aimed at improving everyday usability.
Expected equipment may include a 360-degree camera, front and side parking sensors and rear disc brakes. These additions could make the SUV easier to manoeuvre in tight spaces while also improving its safety equipment.
Cabin Could Get a Premium Upgrade
The interior is expected to receive more noticeable changes than the exterior.
The new Thar could feature a TFT instrument cluster, automatic climate control, an auto-dimming IRVM and ventilated front seats. The seats may also receive upgraded perforated leatherette upholstery.
Mahindra could borrow several premium touches from the Thar Roxx, including soft-touch materials and an upgraded sound system.
Another major addition could be Level 2 ADAS, potentially offered on the top-spec LX variant. If introduced, this would give the three-door Thar a significant technology upgrade.
Existing Engine Options Could Continue
The facelift is not expected to bring major changes to the powertrain lineup. The updated Thar could continue with the existing 1.5-litre turbo-diesel, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engines.
The 1.5-litre diesel could continue with a manual transmission and rear-wheel-drive configuration, while the larger 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel engines could be offered with automatic transmission and four-wheel drive.
Launch Could Be Around the Corner
With test vehicles continuing to appear on Indian roads, the new Mahindra Thar facelift appears to be moving closer to production.
While the company has not officially revealed all the details, the expected combination of Thar Roxx-inspired styling, new technology, upgraded cabin features and additional safety equipment could make the facelifted Thar a more appealing package without changing its core off-road character.
