Trump New 100% Tariff: US President Donald Trump has announced a tariff of up to 100% on drones and their parts imported from abroad, with the aim of reducing America's dependence on China.

A statement issued by the White House said the decision was made in light of national security concerns. The tariffs apply to sensitive drones weighing more than 25 kilograms or featuring advanced security technology such as thermal imaging. Smaller drones that are not national security-critical will be subject to a lower tariff of 25%.

What is Trump's motive?

Although this tariff applies to drones from all countries, it primarily targets China. To counter the dominance of Chinese drone technology, these hefty tariffs are imposed only on categories where China holds a monopoly, such as its dominance of the global unmanned aircraft market.

Approximately 80% of drones in the US commercial market come from China. Chinese drones are used in everything from Hollywood to content creation, real estate, and the agricultural sector. Chinese tech company DJI (Da-Jiang Innovations) holds over 70% of the global commercial drone market.

Trump targets China

The White House said in a statement that these measures are aimed at promoting domestic production of drones and their parts and reducing dependence on foreign supply chains. Most of the new tariffs are set to take effect on September 3. Last week, China banned drone exports to the US and blacklisted six US companies in response to US-imposed trade restrictions over forced labor and national security concerns. China's move came just days after the US imposed new tariffs on China and 59 other countries.

Impact of Trump's decision on India?

While Trump hasn't placed India under the strictest 100% tariff category, Indian drone exporters are facing significant pressure. This is because the US is imposing a 25% tariff on Indian commercial and small drones. However, the silver lining is that China's dominance in the US commercial drone market will diminish, providing a great opportunity for Indian companies like ideaForge, Drone Acharya, and Garuda Aerospace to expand into the US market.
