Pakistan has reportedly sought $10 billion in financial assistance from the United States as it continues to grapple with a severe economic crisis and dwindling foreign exchange reserves. The request is said to have been made under a proposed Bilateral Exchange Stabilization Support Facility, which Islamabad believes could provide much-needed support to its struggling economy.
According to reports, Pakistan has argued that its diplomatic efforts during the recent tensions involving the United States and Iran demonstrate its willingness to play a constructive regional role. The country is reportedly seeking economic assistance as part of a broader effort to stabilise its finances and strengthen bilateral ties with Washington.
The proposal has reportedly been submitted to senior US officials, but no official decision has been announced so far. It remains unclear whether the United States will consider the request or move forward with any financial support.
What Is the Proposed Support Facility?
The proposed Bilateral Exchange Stabilization Support Facility is aimed at strengthening a country's foreign exchange position through financial assistance such as currency support, swap arrangements, or other stabilisation measures. If approved, Pakistan hopes the package would help improve its financial stability over the next five years.
The expected benefits include:
- Strengthening the country's foreign exchange reserves.
- Reducing pressure on the Pakistani rupee.
- Making it easier to finance imports and repay external debt.
- Lowering dependence on emergency financial assistance from international lenders.
Why Is Pakistan Seeking Financial Support?
Pakistan has been facing persistent economic challenges, including high inflation, a weakening currency, rising debt obligations, and pressure on its foreign exchange reserves. The country is currently implementing economic reforms under an International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout programme, which has required measures such as tax increases, reduced subsidies, and tighter government spending.
While these reforms are intended to stabilise the economy, they have also increased the cost of living for many citizens and led to growing public concern over inflation and unemployment.
Hope for Additional International Funding
Pakistani officials reportedly believe that securing financial support from the United States could also improve the country's ability to attract further assistance from international financial institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, helping ease its broader economic challenges.
Awaiting the US Decision
At present, the United States has not issued any official statement regarding Pakistan's reported request. If the proposal receives approval, it could provide short-term financial relief and strengthen Pakistan's foreign exchange position. However, if the request is not accepted, the country is expected to continue relying on IMF-backed reforms and support from other international financial institutions as it works to stabilise its economy.
