Pakistan’s Left-Arm Pacer Waqas Maqsood Retires, Ends Career with 458 Wickets

Pakistan cricket has seen another retirement shock. Just days after Usman Shinwari stepped away from the game, left-arm fast bowler Waqas Maqsood has announced his retirement from international cricket at the age of 36. Maqsood last played for Pakistan in 2018, featuring in a T20I against New Zealand, where he picked up two wickets. That match turned out to be his only international appearance.

Though his international career was limited, Maqsood carved a strong reputation in Pakistan’s domestic circuit. He represented Faisalabad in first-class cricket and also featured in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for Islamabad United and Karachi Kings. Beyond Pakistan, he played franchise cricket in the Lanka Premier League with Galle Gladiators.

Over his career, Maqsood played 81 first-class matches, taking 294 wickets, along with 87 wickets in 56 List A games. In T20 cricket, he claimed 77 wickets, taking his overall tally to 458 professional wickets. In the PSL, he bagged 27 wickets in 20 matches, with his best figures being 4 for 35. His final professional wicket came against Abbottabad, though his side eventually lost that match.

Maqsood’s retirement follows that of fellow left-arm pacer Usman Shinwari, who recently quit cricket after battling a long-term back injury. Shinwari played one Test, 17 ODIs, and 16 T20Is for Pakistan, collecting 48 wickets before being forced into early retirement.
