Baba Ramdev, the founder of Patanjali, has helped popularize ancient Ayurvedic practices, making natural health solutions accessible to all. In today’s fast-paced life, mental health often suffers due to stress and anxiety. Yoga, especially pranayama or breathing techniques, offers effective relief by calming the mind and improving oxygen flow to the brain. Patanjali Wellness recommends these five pranayamas to reduce mental disturbance and promote overall health:
-
Anulom-Vilom:
Also called alternate nostril breathing, this technique involves sitting comfortably (Sukhasana), closing one nostril, and inhaling through the other. Then the closed nostril is opened for exhalation while closing the other nostril. Anulom-Vilom enhances oxygen supply, helps regulate blood pressure, and soothes the mind. -
Bhastrika Pranayama:
In a meditative posture, inhale and exhale gradually and effortlessly. This energizes the lungs, calms the nervous system, and relaxes the mind, providing a refreshing mental boost. -
Kapalbhati Pranayama:
Focus is placed on forceful exhalation while inhalation happens passively. Beginners are advised to take it slow without pushing too hard. Kapalbhati strengthens heart and lung health and has significant benefits for mental clarity and stress reduction. -
Bhramari Pranayama:
Known as the “bee breath,” this calming technique involves covering the eyes with both hands and breathing slowly while chanting “Om” for 3 to 5 seconds. It enhances mental wellbeing and creates a deep sense of peace. -
Ujjayi Pranayama:
This breathing practice involves inhaling through both nostrils with a slight contraction at the throat, producing a gentle snoring sound. It helps relieve stress, improves sleep quality, digestion, and lung function. The exhale is done through the left nostril while closing the right.
By regularly practicing these pranayamas, you can manage anxiety, improve mental balance, and strengthen your body’s resilience. Baba Ramdev’s teachings remind us that ancient yogic wisdom supports holistic health for mind and body alike.
