This time the heat has broken all records in Delhi and North India. The maximum temperature in the capital Delhi was recorded at 43.4 degrees Celsius on June 9, but the felt temperature i.e. the 'heat index' reached 48.9 degrees. Due to this, people are troubled not only by the scorching sun but also by the heat that feels more like a heat wave. The Meteorological Department is constantly warning that now this heat can not only be uncomfortable but can also prove to be fatal.
What is the heat tolerance limit of the human body?
The human body usually functions comfortably in a temperature of 35 to 37 degrees Celsius. This is considered the normal body temperature. When the temperature of the environment goes up to 40 degrees or above, it starts having a bad effect on the body. According to experts, as the temperature increases, the body's cooling system becomes active. Sweating, heat coming out of the skin, and the body's attempt to keep itself cool - all these are natural processes. But if the outside temperature is very high and there is humidity in the air, then this process of the body slows down.
When the outside temperature reaches 40 degrees, the body starts losing water i.e. dehydration. Excessive sweating leads to the depletion of essential electrolytes in the body, which increases weakness and fatigue. If the temperature crosses 42 degrees, a situation like heat stroke can occur. In this situation, the body is unable to keep itself cool and the internal temperature of the body goes out of control.
Death can occur at 44 degrees Celsius
When the body temperature reaches 44 degrees Celsius, it can be fatal. Medical research shows that in this condition the brain does not get oxygen, brain damage can occur and sometimes a serious condition like heart failure can also occur. This is the reason why a temperature of 45 degrees or more is considered the 'death limit' for humans.
How close is Delhi's heat to this limit?
The temperature of 43.4 degrees and the heat index of 48.9 degrees in Delhi shows that people are experiencing almost the same temperature, which can be fatal for the body. It is not just the temperature but heat stress, which can break the body from within.
Why is heat stroke dangerous?
Heat stroke occurs when the body temperature rises above 40 degrees and the cooling system fails. Its symptoms are:
- throbbing headache
- feeling like vomiting
- Dizziness or fainting
- Skin becomes hot and dry (sweating stops)
- Rapid heartbeat
- trouble speaking or confusion
If timely treatment is not received, this condition can lead to death.
What is the safe temperature for humans?
- Normal temperature: 35–37°C
- Onset of dehydration: 40°C
- Risk of heat stroke: 42–43°C
- Life threatening/death: 44°C or above
Preventive measures
- Keep your head covered when you leave the house
- drink plenty of water and salt-sugar beverages
- Avoid going out in direct sunlight
- Avoid going out during very hot hours (12 noon to 4 pm)
- Take special care of the sick, children and the elderly
- If you feel weakness or dizziness in the body, contact a doctor immediately
