Rooftop solar is becoming an increasingly popular option for households looking to reduce their electricity expenses. The government's PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has now crossed an important milestone, with more than 48 lakh households benefiting from rooftop solar installations since the scheme was launched in February 2024.

More Than 48 Lakh Homes Covered

According to the latest government data, 39,72,447 rooftop solar systems had been installed under the scheme by July 22, 2026, benefiting 48,02,717 households across the country. During financial year 2025-26 alone, 18.71 lakh rooftop solar systems were installed, adding around 6.7 GW of solar capacity.

The scheme is available to residential electricity consumers, including those in rural areas, who have a grid-connected electricity connection with their local DISCOM.

Government Subsidy Can Reduce the Initial Cost

One of the biggest attractions of PM Surya Ghar is the Central Financial Assistance available for eligible residential rooftop solar installations. The government provides higher assistance for the first 2 kW of rooftop solar capacity, making smaller systems more affordable for households.

The government has also introduced concessional financing options. Eligible consumers can obtain collateral-free loans from nationalised banks at a concessional interest rate linked to the repo rate. The current rate mentioned by the government is 5.75% per year, with a tenure of up to 10 years.

Electricity Bills Can Fall Significantly

Installing rooftop solar does not necessarily mean that every household will receive a zero electricity bill. The actual saving depends on the size of the solar system, household consumption, generation, self-consumption and applicable electricity regulations.

However, the government says that electricity bills of consumers installing rooftop solar under the scheme have generally reduced. More than 18.93 lakh households have reported zero electricity bills for some months, depending on their electricity consumption and solar generation.

Who Can Apply?

The scheme is designed for residential electricity consumers with a grid-connected electricity connection from the local DISCOM. Both urban and rural households can apply.

Applicants need to use the official National Portal and follow the prescribed process for rooftop solar installation. The system is installed through the applicable process involving registered vendors and the concerned electricity distribution company.

Before applying, homeowners should check their electricity consumption and determine an appropriate solar-system capacity. The condition and available space on the rooftop should also be considered.

It is equally important to compare the installation details, warranty and equipment specifications offered by the authorised vendor. Consumers should avoid paying money to unofficial agents promising faster subsidy approval.
