FIR against Rahul Gandhi: Many countries around the world, such as the United States and Britain, allow their citizens to hold passports from two countries, but this is not the case in India. According to Article 9 of the Indian Constitution, as soon as an Indian citizen acquires citizenship of another country, his or her Indian citizenship automatically ceases. This case concerns Rahul Gandhi's citizenship. According to the Indian Constitution, no person can hold citizenship of two countries simultaneously.

The petitioner alleges that Rahul Gandhi holds both Indian and British citizenship. The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has ordered the registration of an FIR and an investigation against Rahul Gandhi. A bench headed by Justice Subhash Vidyarthi issued this order while hearing a petition filed by BJP worker Vignesh Shishir.

What are the allegations against Rahul Gandhi?

The entire controversy stems from a company called Backops Limited, registered in the UK. It is alleged that between 2003 and 2009, Rahul Gandhi was shown as a "British citizen" in this company's documents. The petitioner claims that Rahul Gandhi declared himself a British citizen and obtained a passport or legal status there. The petition filed in the Allahabad High Court alleges that Rahul Gandhi concealed the facts of his foreign citizenship.

What happened in the court?

The court said the allegations should be investigated. It directed the Uttar Pradesh government to either investigate the matter itself or have it investigated by a central agency. The decision came on a petition filed by Karnataka BJP worker Vignesh Shishir. The petitioner also submitted documents allegedly related to the returns of a British company, where Rahul Gandhi was described as a "British citizen."

What will happen next?

Following this court order, the police will now have to register a case as per the legal process. If the investigation proves that Rahul Gandhi had acquired foreign citizenship, his membership in Parliament could be in danger. However, the Congress Party and Rahul Gandhi's legal team are calling this a politically motivated case.
