Rishabh Pant’s return to competitive cricket has hit another roadblock, with fresh reports raising doubts over his availability for India A’s upcoming red-ball series against New Zealand A.
The Indian selectors have included Pant in the India A squad for the New Zealand tour, but his participation remains dependent on his fitness. India A are scheduled to play three red-ball matches against New Zealand A, with the series beginning on October 24.
Viral infection followed by back trouble
Pant’s selection was reportedly made after considering his fitness, but his preparations have now been disrupted. He was initially reported to be recovering from a viral infection, which was expected to keep him away from training for around a week.
However, a new concern has emerged. Reports now suggest that the wicketkeeper-batter is also dealing with back spasms.
According to a report cited by The Times of India, Pant experienced the back spasms during the Irani Cup. The issue could reportedly require around 10 to 15 days of recovery, putting his availability for the India A series under a cloud.
Will Pant miss the opening matches?
The timing of the injury could make things complicated for Pant. With the first red-ball match scheduled for October 24, he may have limited preparation time even if he recovers within the expected period.
For a player returning to competitive cricket, match fitness and adequate training will be particularly important. The team management is therefore likely to take a cautious approach rather than rushing him back.
November 7 could be Pant’s chance
There could still be a window for Pant to feature in the tour.
The final match of the India A-New Zealand A red-ball series is scheduled for November 7. If Pant recovers from the back spasms within the reported 10-to-15-day timeframe and successfully returns to training, he could potentially be available for the later part of the series.
For now, though, Pant’s participation remains uncertain. His fitness will be closely monitored in the coming days, and a clearer picture is expected once he resumes training and undergoes further assessment.
