Team India's growing injury list has once again come under the spotlight after fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out of the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka. The development has reportedly raised concerns within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over communication between the National Cricket Academy's Centre of Excellence (CoE) and the national selection committee.
According to reports, selectors were initially informed that Bumrah could be available for at least one Test. However, subsequent medical assessments indicated that his injury was more serious than previously believed. The situation reportedly led to a virtual meeting between CoE officials and chief selector Ajit Agarkar to discuss the issue.
Questions Over Injury Management
The recent spate of injuries has sparked debate over the effectiveness of player rehabilitation and return-to-play protocols.
Following the departure of former Head of Sports Science Nitin Patel, the BCCI is yet to appoint a permanent replacement. The Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru is currently functioning under interim leadership, and reports suggest that the recent injury cases have brought the department's processes under increased scrutiny.
Concerns have reportedly been raised over whether injured players are being cleared to return before they are fully match-ready.
Several Player Cases Under Discussion
Apart from Bumrah, a number of recent injury cases have also attracted attention.
-
Harshit Rana: Questions have reportedly been raised over his return to action before his hamstring issue resurfaced.
-
Washington Sundar: His repeated hamstring injuries have led to discussions about long-term workload management and rehabilitation.
-
Nitish Reddy: Reports suggest there are questions about whether changes in his training routine may have contributed to his injury concerns.
-
Sai Sudharsan: Despite continuing batting practice while recovering from a leg injury, there are concerns that his fitness status could change before selection decisions are finalized.
These cases have intensified discussions around workload monitoring, fitness assessments, and rehabilitation standards.
Team Physio Also Faces Scrutiny
The spotlight has also reportedly turned towards Team India's chief physiotherapist, Kamlesh Jain, who has been associated with the national side for the past several years.
Although Jain is said to enjoy the confidence of many players, the increasing number of injuries has reportedly prompted fresh questions about the team's medical and rehabilitation processes.
BCCI Review Meeting Expected to Address the Issue
A high-level BCCI review meeting, which has reportedly been pending since the England tour, is expected to examine the growing injury concerns.
According to reports, the meeting may include senior officials such as:
-
Head coach Gautam Gambhir
-
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar
-
VVS Laxman, Head of Cricket at the Centre of Excellence
-
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia
The discussions are expected to focus on injury management, communication between the medical and selection teams, player workload, and the overall functioning of the sports science department.
Focus on Preventing Future Injuries
With several key players spending significant time on the sidelines, improving injury management has become a priority for Indian cricket. The outcome of the upcoming review meeting could play an important role in shaping future fitness protocols and ensuring that players return to international cricket only after meeting the required medical standards.
