SA A vs IND A: Spinner Prenellan Subrayen Takes 5 Wickets, Raises Concerns for India After Controversial Bowling Past

The first unofficial Test between India A and South Africa A in Bengaluru has turned in favor of the visitors after a strong bowling performance. South Africa A secured a 75-run first-innings lead, restricting India A to 234 runs. The star of the show was 32-year-old off-spinner Prenellan Subrayen, whose spin bowling completely dismantled India’s batting lineup.

Subrayen’s five-wicket haul rattles India A
Subrayen emerged as the most successful bowler for South Africa A, delivering a stellar spell of 22 overs, 5 wickets for 61 runs. He dismissed key Indian batsmen including Ayush Mhatre, Devdutt Padikkal, Rajat Patidar, Tanush Kotian, and Khaleel Ahmed, ensuring India A failed to match South Africa’s first-innings total of 309. To stay in contention, India A will now need a strong fightback in their second innings.

Bowler once reported for suspect action
Prenellan Subrayen’s name previously made headlines for a different reason. The off-spinner was reported for a suspect bowling action during his Test debut against Zimbabwe. He was subsequently sent for a review at an ICC-accredited testing facility.

Fortunately for Subrayen, the tests conducted in early September cleared his action, confirming it to be legal. Since then, he has been steadily rebuilding his career. Subrayen has played two Test matches and one ODI for South Africa, claiming six wickets in Tests and one in ODIs.

Consistent performer in domestic cricket
Beyond the international stage, Subrayen has been a reliable performer in South Africa’s domestic circuit and a key player in the SA20 League. His recent five-wicket haul against India A not only reinforces his comeback but also sends a warning to India’s future stars, who struggled to read his variations.
