The Indian cricket team squad for the 2026 Asian Games was announced last month, but now reports suggest that changes could be made before the tournament begins. With the BCCI reportedly considering modifications to the squad, questions have emerged over whether Sanju Samson could be among the players affected.
The Asian Games cricket competition will be played in the T20 format, and if the selectors decide to make changes, Samson's position could once again become a topic of discussion. The wicketkeeper-batter was recently left out of the Zimbabwe tour squad, with the selectors citing rest as the reason, leading to debate among fans on social media.
BCCI may request changes in Asian Games squad
According to a report, the BCCI could approach the concerned authorities to make last-minute changes to India's 15-member Asian Games squad. However, the exact nature of the possible changes has not been revealed yet.
Any modifications will have to be made according to the tournament's regulations, and the final decision will depend on discussions between the board and the relevant officials.
India's Asian Games squad announced last month
The Indian squad selected for the 2026 Asian Games includes several players who are currently part of the T20 setup. The team is:
Shreyas Iyer (Captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Shivam Dube, Tilak Varma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Jasprit Bumrah, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh and Vaibhav Suryavanshi.
Will selectors drop Sanju Samson again?
Since the Asian Games squad features many players from India's current T20 group, any change in the team could bring Samson's name into focus. The wicketkeeper-batter has missed out on recent selections, including the Zimbabwe tour, and another exclusion would likely attract attention.
However, there has been no official confirmation that Samson will be removed from the Asian Games squad. A final decision will only be known if the BCCI officially submits any changes.
Asian Games 2026 schedule
The 2026 Asian Games will be held in Japan from September 19 to October 4. The cricket matches are scheduled to take place from September 24 to October 3.
With the tournament approaching, all eyes will now be on whether Team India's squad remains unchanged or whether the selectors make a surprise move before the competition begins.
