The late 90s musical masterpiece Taal is officially set for a sequel, but fans of the original cast might need to manage their expectations. Filmmaker Subhash Ghai has provided a significant update on the project, confirming that while the soul of the film remains a "musical love story," the lead actors who made the 1999 classic iconic will not be returning.
New Lead Cast for a New Era
Despite the lingering popularity of Anil Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Akshaye Khanna, Ghai clarified that the original stars have been ruled out for the sequel.
"We can't cast the same actors from 'Taal' today as they’ve grown older," Ghai explained. "It is impossible to continue the original story with them. I want new faces to play the main leads."
Addressing rumors of potential cameos, the filmmaker maintained a firm stance, stating that his production house, Mukta Arts, avoids "gimmicks" like casting former stars just for star power. Unless a character truly demands it, fans should not expect to see the original trio in Taal 2.
