In the first qualifier of IPL 2025, Royal Challengers Bangalore dismantled Punjab Kings, bowling them out for a mere 101 runs in just 14.1 overs — a collapse so shocking that legendary commentator Sunil Gavaskar couldn’t believe his eyes. Calling Punjab’s batting “suicide” during the live commentary, Gavaskar harshly criticized their reckless approach.
Gavaskar’s blunt verdict
From the very first ball, Punjab’s batsmen attacked aggressively but paid the price with wickets tumbling in quick succession. After Marcus Stoinis was dismissed attempting a wild slog sweep against RCB’s Suyash Sharma, Gavaskar exclaimed, “This is unbelievable. This is like committing suicide, isn’t it?” Punjab had already lost 7 wickets for 78 runs, with no signs of recovery.
Key wickets fell early
Punjab’s struggles started when Priyansh Arya, one of their season’s top scorers, fell cheaply in the second over trying to drive Yash Dayal. His partner Prabhsimran Singh charged at Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s delivery in the powerplay but was caught behind. Captain Shreyas Iyer soon fell trying a slog against Josh Hazlewood, who also dismissed Josh Inglis with a bouncy delivery. At 50 runs for 4 wickets, Punjab’s innings was already on the ropes.
No resistance, swift collapse
Despite the early wickets, no batsman managed to anchor the innings. Punjab’s batsmen continued throwing away their wickets recklessly, leading to a humiliating all-out total of just 101.
Coach Ricky Ponting’s frustration
Punjab’s innings ended with 41 balls remaining, highlighting the lack of discipline. Head coach Ricky Ponting was visibly upset and was seen having a serious conversation with captain Shreyas Iyer following his dismissal, reflecting the disappointment within the team.
