Summer can be particularly harsh on hair. Intense sunlight, excessive sweating, dust, and bacterial buildup can leave hair dry, dull, and greasy within a short period of time. However, making a few simple changes to your hair care routine can help keep your hair soft, shiny, and healthy even during the hottest months. Here are some easy summer hair care tips that can help protect your hair from seasonal damage.
As temperatures rise, people often change their diets, clothing, and skincare routines. Heavy winter creams are replaced with lighter products, but hair care is often overlooked. The scorching heat can strip moisture from the hair, causing it to lose its natural shine. Taking proper care of your hair during summer is essential to maintain its strength and health.
Keep Your Hair Hydrated
During summer, strong sunlight can dry out the ends of the hair, reducing its shine and smoothness. Applying a hydrating hair mask at least once a week can help restore moisture. A simple homemade mask can be prepared using yogurt, aloe vera, and hibiscus flowers (fresh or dried). Grind these ingredients into a smooth paste and apply it from the scalp to the ends. Leave it on for about 30 minutes before washing it off. This natural remedy helps nourish and moisturize the hair.
Protect Hair from Direct Sunlight
Just like skin, hair can also be damaged by prolonged exposure to the sun. Excessive sunlight weakens hair strands, leading to breakage and split ends. To prevent this, cover your hair with a scarf or dupatta while going outdoors, or use an umbrella for protection. Avoid tying extremely tight hairstyles, as they can further weaken hair during hot weather.
Avoid Washing Hair Daily
Sweating in summer often makes people wash their hair more frequently. However, daily shampooing can strip the hair of its natural oils, making it dry and brittle. Instead, try using a lightweight hair serum to control frizz and create a protective layer on the hair. If washing is necessary, use a mild shampoo to maintain the natural moisture balance.
Use Lightweight Oils
Hair oiling is important in summer as well, but the type and duration matter. Heavy oils can make hair greasy in hot weather. Instead, use lighter oils such as jojoba oil or almond oil. It is also recommended to apply oil about an hour before washing your hair rather than leaving it overnight.
‘Skinification’ – A Growing Hair Care Trend
A new concept in hair care known as “skinification” is gaining popularity. This approach treats the scalp with the same care as facial skin. When dust and sweat accumulate on the scalp, using lighter products like toners instead of heavy creams can help maintain scalp health. For example, rinsing hair with boiled hibiscus water after shampooing can nourish the hair. Similarly, washing hair with rice water helps balance the scalp’s pH level and strengthen hair. Applying aloe vera gel on damp hair for a few minutes after shampooing can also act as a natural conditioner.
