Tilak Varma Undergoes Sudden Surgery, Doubt Over T20 World Cup Participation

Team India has been dealt a major concern ahead of the upcoming T20 series against New Zealand and the T20 World Cup, as star batter Tilak Varma had to undergo an emergency operation following an injury sustained during the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Tilak Varma was leading Hyderabad in the domestic tournament when he complained of severe pain during a match against Bengal. He was immediately taken to hospital, where scans revealed testicular torsion, a condition that required urgent surgery. The operation was reportedly successful, but his return-to-play timeline remains uncertain.

Why Was Tilak Varma Operated On?

According to reports, Tilak experienced sudden testicular pain during the match, prompting medical intervention. Doctors diagnosed testicular torsion, following which surgery was carried out without delay. While the immediate medical emergency has been addressed, the recovery period has now put his cricketing commitments under question.

Uncertainty Over T20 World Cup

Tilak Varma is an important part of India’s T20 setup and is considered a key member of the playing XI. However, with reports suggesting a recovery period of three to four weeks, there is uncertainty over his availability for the India–New Zealand T20 series scheduled later this month.

India are also preparing for the upcoming T20 World Cup, beginning February 7. With no official update yet from the team management or the BCCI regarding Tilak’s fitness status, his participation will depend on how quickly he regains full match fitness.

Likely to Miss New Zealand Series?

The India–New Zealand T20 series is set to begin soon, with multiple matches scheduled across Nagpur, Raipur, Guwahati, Visakhapatnam and Thiruvananthapuram. If Tilak Varma is sidelined for close to a month, it appears unlikely that he will feature in the series against New Zealand.

However, there is optimism that he could return in time for the T20 World Cup, provided his recovery progresses smoothly and he clears fitness assessments.
