According to media reports, the man, Murali, was going from the first floor to the second floor with his wife. While descending the elevator on the second floor, someone from the third floor pressed a button, and the elevator began moving upwards with the doors open. Murali had one foot inside the elevator and the other on the outside, so he became trapped in the elevator grille, a gap between the second and third floors. Residents of the apartment building alerted the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRA) around 9:15 a.m. A disaster management team arrived at the scene at 9:30 a.m. and began the rescue operation.

It has been learned that to rescue Murali, the rescue team had to break a part of the lift's structure, and firefighters used hydraulic cutters to cut the grill. After about an hour and a half of effort, Murali was rescued around 10:50 am and taken to a nearby hospital. A video of the rescue operation has been released. Murali is reported to have suffered a broken leg and is undergoing treatment at a local hospital. Rescuers said the incident occurred because the sensors in the old lift were not working properly.
