Summers and mangoes go hand in hand—but the joy of mango season often turns into disappointment when the fruit starts spoiling too soon. Whether you’ve picked a basketful from your tree or bought extra from the market, mangoes need the right storage to stay fresh and delicious.
Here are 5 simple yet effective ways to store mangoes and extend their shelf life—so you can enjoy them longer without waste.
1. Never Mix Raw and Ripe Mangoes
Raw mangoes ripen faster when kept near ripe ones due to the natural gases the ripe mangoes release.
What to do:
Wrap raw mangoes in newspaper or paper bags and store them separately to slow the ripening process.
2. Use Newspaper or Cotton Cloth, Not Plastic
Storing mangoes in plastic traps moisture and speeds up spoilage.
What to do:
Wrap mangoes in newspaper or breathable cotton cloth. This absorbs excess moisture and keeps the fruit dry and fresh.
3. Refrigerate Ripe Mangoes (The Right Way)
Fully ripened mangoes can last longer when chilled properly.
What to do:
Place ripe mangoes in an airtight container before refrigerating. This retains moisture and keeps them fresh for up to 45 days.
4. Freeze Mango Pulp or Slices
Too many ripe mangoes at once? Preserve them for year-round use.
What to do:
Peel and extract the pulp or cut mangoes into pieces, then store in ziplock bags or airtight containers in the freezer. Great for aamras, smoothies, and desserts even after summer ends.
5. Store in a Cool, Dry, Well-Ventilated Spot
Heat and humidity are the biggest enemies of mango freshness.
What to do:
Keep mangoes in a well-ventilated room away from direct sunlight, ideally where the temperature stays cool and dry.
