The main cause of warts

Types of warts

Flat warts: Appear as smooth and small spots on the face and legs.  

Genital warts: These are spread through sexual contact and can increase the risk of cervical cancer in severe cases.

Symptoms and identification

Warts usually appear as raised, hard or soft spots on the skin. Some may have black dots (blood vessels) visible. Genital warts may look like cauliflower. If the wart is painful, itchy, bleeds or grows rapidly, get it checked by a dermatologist immediately.

Precautions-

  • Wash your hands, feet and body regularly with soap and water, especially after returning from public places, such as the gym or swimming pool. Keep nails clean and be careful when cutting them, as dirt or cuts can introduce the HPV virus

  • If you have cuts, scratches, or wounds on your skin, clean them immediately and cover them with a bandage. The HPV virus enters easily through broken skin.
  • Get the HPV vaccine at the age of 9-45 years to prevent genital warts and cervical cancer. It provides protection against some dangerous HPV strains. Consult a doctor before taking the vaccine.
