Specifically, a 2018 study published in the journal Neuroradiology found that tightening a tie can reduce blood circulation to the brain by up to 7.5%. The research, conducted at the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein in Germany, involved 30 young men between the ages of 21 and 28.

Participants were divided into two groups: one wore ties tightened to a point of slight discomfort using the Windsor knot, while the other group didn’t wear ties. MRI scans revealed that the group wearing ties experienced reduced blood flow to the brain, which persisted even after loosening the tie.
