The weather has once again changed in many parts of the country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for 11 states including Assam, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Light to moderate rain, thunder, strong winds and lightning are expected in these areas. According to the IMD forecast, winds may blow at a speed of 50-60 km/h in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, while in some areas there is a possibility of storms up to 70 km/h. At the same time, a dust storm warning has been issued in western Rajasthan.
Other affected states include Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, West Bengal and Jharkhand, where the weather may deteriorate within the next 24 to 48 hours. The situation in Northeast India remains very serious. So far 36 people have lost their lives due to floods and landslides caused by heavy rains. Assam alone has confirmed 11 deaths, besides Arunachal Pradesh (10), Meghalaya (6), Mizoram (5), Sikkim (3) and Tripura (1).
The IMD has warned that rain may continue in most parts of the Northeast for the next 7 days and very heavy rainfall is expected at some places on June 3. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the worst-affected Lakhimpur district and assured all possible assistance to the affected people.
Schools remained closed for the fourth consecutive day on Tuesday in Mizoram's capital Aizawl. The district administration has issued instructions to keep all educational institutions closed given the safety of the students. Given the IMD warnings, the administration has appealed to the people to stay in safe places, avoid traveling and pay attention to government alerts.
