The Western Railway has significantly strengthened its safety and operational efficiency by upgrading its communication infrastructure across the Mumbai Division. The old communication system has now been replaced with a modern IP-MPLS network, making railway operations faster, more reliable, and future-ready.
This major upgrade has directly improved critical functions such as train operations, ticketing, signaling, and security systems.
Why the Upgrade Was Necessary
Earlier, the railway relied on the SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) system, which had limited capacity and slower fault recovery. Officials explained that the older system functioned like a single-lane road—if a fault occurred, the entire operation slowed down.
In contrast, the new IP-MPLS network works like a multi-lane highway. If one path fails, traffic is instantly diverted to another, ensuring uninterrupted operations. The system supports both online and offline functionality with far greater accuracy and acts as a backbone for multiple railway services.
According to Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer, Western Railway, the upgrade has been implemented keeping future requirements in mind, with a focus on punctual train operations, enhanced safety, and improved passenger services.
Key Systems Now Running on the New Network
Under the project, extensive infrastructure has been deployed across the Mumbai Division:
-
96 access routers and 12 core routers installed
-
Over 31 km of optical fiber cable laid
-
A central monitoring center at Mumbai Central, overseeing the entire network
-
Introduction of IP phones and a VoIP communication system
Several crucial railway systems now operate on this upgraded network, including:
-
Train Control and Traction Power Control
-
Ticketing systems PRS/UTS
-
Freight Operations Information System (FOIS)
-
Signaling systems
-
The indigenous railway safety system Kavach
Notably, ticketing network speed has increased from 2 Mbps to 1 Gbps, significantly improving ticket booking and data transfer efficiency.
Ready for the Future
With this transition from an outdated communication setup to a high-speed, intelligent digital network, the Mumbai Division of Western Railway has taken a major step toward modernization. The upgrade ensures smoother operations, faster response times, and enhanced safety, positioning Mumbai’s rail network as fully prepared for future technological demands.
