Akshay Kumar has always been one of the busiest actors in Bollywood, known for releasing multiple films every year. But there have also been moments when he had to walk away from a project midway. One such incident took place two decades ago, changing the fate of a film completely — and giving Bobby Deol a chance to step into the lead.
The film in question was “Barsaat” (2005). Initially, Akshay Kumar was the top choice for the role opposite Priyanka Chopra, with whom he had already delivered several hit films. The two had even shot a song for the film. But soon after, Akshay presented a condition to director Sunil Darshan — either Priyanka should be replaced, or he would leave the film.
The reason was personal. Around that time, rumors of Akshay and Priyanka’s growing closeness had become the talk of the industry. Reports suggested that these speculations had caused turbulence in Akshay’s marriage, with Twinkle Khanna reportedly upset enough to leave their home briefly. The family tension began affecting Akshay’s work, and when the director refused to replace Priyanka, Akshay decided to step away from the project to maintain peace at home.
That’s when Bobby Deol entered the picture. The makers re-shot the title track that had already been filmed with Akshay and Priyanka, this time featuring Bobby and Priyanka. Alongside them, Bipasha Basu also played a crucial role. Despite the controversies, the film turned out to be successful, made on a budget of Rs 10 crore and collecting around Rs 20 crore at the box office. Audiences appreciated Bobby and Priyanka’s chemistry, and the film received a warm response.
What began as a setback for Akshay eventually turned into a golden opportunity for Bobby Deol, rewriting the course of the film’s journey.
