If your latest smartphone or laptop felt more expensive than before, it’s not just inflation or brand pricing at work. A sharp rise in memory (RAM) prices is increasingly being seen as a major reason behind costlier electronics across global markets, including India.
Reports linked to a recent lawsuit in a US federal court have brought fresh attention to the global memory chip industry, dominated by three major players—Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron.
RAM Prices Have Jumped Sharply
Over the past few years, memory chip prices are said to have risen dramatically, with some estimates suggesting increases of several hundred percent since 2022. This surge has directly impacted the cost of smartphones, laptops, and other digital devices that depend heavily on DRAM (dynamic random access memory).
Manufacturers like Apple, OnePlus, and Nothing have already passed some of these increased costs to consumers through higher device prices.
Allegations of Market Control
The lawsuit claims that the three dominant memory manufacturers collectively control most of the global DRAM supply and may have limited production during periods of rising demand. The allegation suggests that instead of increasing output to stabilize prices, supply was restricted, contributing to a sharp price increase.
However, this remains a legal allegation and has not been proven in court.
Shift Toward AI Is Changing the Market
A major factor reshaping the memory industry is the explosive growth of artificial intelligence.
Tech companies building AI data centers require large volumes of high-performance memory such as HBM (High Bandwidth Memory). This demand has pushed chipmakers to prioritize AI-focused contracts over traditional consumer RAM used in smartphones and PCs.
As a result, production of older-generation memory types has reportedly slowed, tightening supply for everyday devices.
Some manufacturers have also shifted strategy toward long-term AI supply deals, reducing emphasis on retail consumer memory markets.
Why New Competitors Don’t Enter Easily
The memory chip industry is extremely difficult to enter due to:
- Extremely high setup costs for manufacturing plants
- Long development cycles and complex production technology
- Strict qualification processes from major buyers like Apple and Dell
- Global trade restrictions on advanced semiconductor equipment
This makes it hard for new players to challenge existing giants.
Apple and Its Memory Suppliers
Apple does not rely on a single supplier for memory components. Instead, it sources RAM from multiple vendors, including Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, depending on device models and production batches.
Its unified memory systems in Mac and iPhone devices use highly customized memory modules tailored for performance and efficiency.
Industry Response
Chipmakers argue that pricing changes reflect market realities rather than manipulation. They point out that earlier periods of low pricing led to reduced profits and delayed investments, while current AI-driven demand has created a shift toward higher-value contracts.
This transition, they say, is reshaping how memory is allocated globally.

India, as one of the largest markets for smartphones and laptops, is directly affected by rising memory costs:
