In a shocking case of betrayal and domestic violence, a woman in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, returned to her in-laws’ home only to find her husband living with a second wife—married in her absence. When she protested, the husband, along with the second wife and in-laws, allegedly beat her up and threw her out of the house.
What Happened?
-
Anita Devi, a resident of Bedouli Bhinsa village, was married to Sunil Kumar on 27 May 2022.
-
After the birth of their daughter, her in-laws began harassing her for dowry.
-
About a month ago, she was allegedly beaten and sent back to her maternal home.
-
While she was away, on 17 May 2025, her husband secretly married another woman named Sangeeta.
The Shocking Return
On 19 May 2025, Anita returned to her marital home in the Neebi Gaharwar area—only to be stunned at the sight of her husband’s second wife living in her bedroom.
When Anita demanded an explanation and objected, her husband, his new wife, and both in-laws allegedly:
-
Abused her
-
Physically assaulted her
-
Threw her out of the house
-
Threatened her with death if she took legal action
No Relief from Community Panchayat
A local panchayat was convened to settle the matter, but no resolution came of it. Left with no other option, Anita approached the Manda police station, where she filed a formal complaint.
Police Action
Based on her statement, the police have registered an FIR against Sunil Kumar, his second wife Sangeeta, mother-in-law Sarita Devi, and father-in-law Ram Naresh. The case is under investigation.
Key Legal Points
-
Bigamy (marrying again while the first spouse is alive and legally wedded) is illegal under Hindu Marriage Act unless permitted by personal law (which in this case, it's not).
-
Anita can also seek protection under Section 498A (cruelty by husband and in-laws) and domestic violence laws.
