Despite the recent Pahalgam terror attack that reignited tensions between India and Pakistan, reports suggest that the two arch-rivals are set to face each other on the cricket field once again. According to media sources, the much-anticipated India-Pakistan match is scheduled to take place in the upcoming Asia Cup, which is set to begin on September 5 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
India-Pakistan Match Dates Revealed
As per a report by The Times of India, the first India-Pakistan encounter is expected on September 7, followed by another high-voltage match on September 14 in the Super Four stage. If both teams qualify for the final, cricket fans might even witness a third face-off on September 21, making it one of the most exciting Asia Cups in recent history.
What’s the Format?
The 2025 edition of the Asia Cup will follow the T20 format and feature six teams — India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and UAE. These teams will be divided into two groups. The top two teams from each group will move into the Super Four stage, where they will play round-robin matches, leading up to the final.
Political Tensions Cast Doubt
Following the Pahalgam terror attack, which saw a strong Indian counter-response through Operation Sindoor, speculation arose that cricketing ties between India and Pakistan might again be put on hold. With cross-border tensions running high and reports of drone attacks by Pakistan, the political climate remains sensitive. As of now, the BCCI has not made an official announcement, and any confirmation on India's participation in a match against Pakistan would depend on clearance from the Indian government.
India’s Dominance in the Asia Cup
India comes into the tournament as the defending champion and the most successful team in Asia Cup history, having lifted the trophy eight times. Sri Lanka has won it six times, while Pakistan has secured the title twice.
While fans eagerly await the return of this iconic rivalry on the cricket pitch, the final call rests with diplomatic and security considerations. For now, all eyes are on the BCCI and the Indian government for the official green light.
