According to Dr. Saloni Chadha, Gynecologist at RML Hospital, pregnant women should focus on foods that provide warmth, strength, and essential nutrients.
Green leafy vegetables such as spinach, fenugreek, and mustard greens are highly recommended, as they are rich in iron and fiber and help prevent anemia and constipation. Dry fruits like almonds, walnuts, and raisins provide healthy fats, energy, and essential minerals.
Milk and milk products are important sources of calcium, which supports the baby’s bone and teeth development. Seasonal fruits such as oranges, guavas, and apples are rich in vitamin C, helping boost immunity and protect against infections. Pulses like lentils, chickpeas, and kidney beans help meet protein requirements. Warm foods such as vegetable soups, dal, and porridge help maintain body warmth and improve digestion during winter.
What should pregnant women avoid?
Certain foods can be harmful during pregnancy, especially in winter. Fried, spicy, and junk foods should be limited, as they can cause acidity, indigestion, and discomfort. Very cold foods and ice-cold drinks should be avoided.
Raw or undercooked meat, eggs, and fish can increase the risk of infections and should be strictly avoided. High caffeine intake from tea and coffee should be limited. Packaged and highly processed foods should also be avoided due to preservatives and excess salt. Smoking, alcohol, and any intoxicating substances are strictly prohibited. Pregnant women should not take any medicine or herbal supplements without consulting a doctor.
