The Pandavas were offered five villages.
The battle between the Pandavas and the Kauravas was not just about power; it was also about justice and injustice. The Pandavas were cheated in a game of gambling and were stripped of their kingdom and forced into exile. Even after completing their exile and incognito period, the Kauravas refused to return the Pandavas' rightful kingdom. War seemed inevitable.

But Shri Krishna knew well that war isn't just about victory or defeat; it also involves the loss of countless lives, the breakdown of society, and the destruction of culture. Therefore, as a last resort, he accepted the role of a peacemaker. He went to Hastinapur and made a reasonable proposal to Duryodhana: the Pandavas should receive only five villages, not their entire kingdom. This proposal was very mild and conciliatory. In fact, from one perspective, it was correct.

Duryodhana's Pride
But Duryodhana's pride was so great that he rejected this offer. His path was one of arrogance, stubbornness, and unrighteousness. He completely rejected the path of negotiation, compromise, and peace.

Shri Krishna's role in this incident was not merely that of a messenger. He tried to convince Duryodhana of dharma, justice, and consequences. He made him realize the dire consequences of war. But when the other side is blinded by pride, even the truth becomes ineffective. This is the tragic truth of this incident.

Duryodhana's Capture of Lord Krishna
Not only this, Duryodhana also attempted to imprison Lord Krishna. At that moment, Lord Krishna manifested his gigantic form, revealing that he was not merely a human being, but a divine being. This incident served as a warning to Duryodhana, but he ignored it.

An important message to draw from this entire incident is that peace should always be the first choice. War should always be the last option. Shri Krishna demonstrated this principle in his actions. He tried his best to avoid war, but when he failed, he stood with Dharma and showed the way in war.

Ultimately, Shri Krishna's peace mission in Hastinapur is not just a historical event, it is a lasting lesson. It teaches us that, "Dialogue may bring peace; but arrogance is sure to lead to war." And therefore, this effort by Shri Krishna is considered one of the most important peace efforts in the history of humanity. Duryodhana's arrogance rejected Shri Krishna's proposal, which led to the defeat of the Kauravas rather than the Pandavas.
